Resurgent Swansea make Petr Cech pay as Sam Clucas double sinks Arsenal
Arsène Wenger had better hope that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is a man of his word because this was the sort of listless performance that could easily prompt a rethink. Arsenal, as has been the case so often this season away from home, delivered a meek and spineless display that suggested it will take much more than a club-record signing up front to address their problems.
Just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Arsenal on a sobering night for their manager and players. They conceded within 60 seconds of taking the lead, Petr Cech then presented Swansea with their second goal when his awful miscue landed at the feet of the indefatigable Jordan Ayew and Arsenal’s ignominy was complete when Sam Clucas scored his second of the evening in the closing minutes.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino bamboozles flat-footed Huddersfield
Liverpool’s epic victory over Manchester City this month was beginning to look like a Pyrrhic one through being followed by two unexpected defeats against teams from the bottom of the Premier League, so there was considerable relief when first-half goals from Emre Can and Roberto Firmino helped Jürgen Klopp’s side stop the rot in West Yorkshire.
“It was not brilliant but it was deserved,” the Liverpool manager said. “It was the reaction we needed. Sometimes a little bit of pressure is not too bad, it can make you perform.”

Olivier Giroud to join Chelsea and unlock Aubameyang’s Arsenal transfer
• Chelsea complete initial £17m deal for Emerson Palmieri
Olivier Giroud is primed to join Chelsea from Arsenal for £17.5m on deadline day, a move that will allow the completion of a chain of transfers that takes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the Emirates Stadium and Michy Batshuayi to Borussia Dortmund.
Agreement was reached in principle between the two London clubs after a day of exhaustive talks, with Arsenal anxious to conclude their own club record £55.5m move for Aubameyang. Even so, Giroud had still been included in Arsène Wenger’s 19-man match-day squad for Tuesday’s Premier League game at Swansea, which the France international began on the bench.

Leicester tell Manchester City it will take ‘mind-blowing’ offer to sign Mahrez
• Leicester yet to receive a bid for Mahrez despite reports
Manchester City have been told it will take a “mind-blowing” offer to sign Riyad Mahrez from Leicester, with Pep Guardiola understood to be keen on adding the Algeria international to his squad after it emerged Leroy Sané will be sidelined for at least 11 matches.
After missing out on Alexis Sánchez Guardiola has identified the PFA Player of the Year for the 2015-16 season as an alternative, with the 26-year-old understood to be keen on moving to the Etihad Stadium. But despite reports in France on Tuesday that City have submitted a bid of €68m for Mahrez, Leicester say they are yet to receive a formal offer and are not keen on selling the player they bought from Le Havre for £450,000 in 2014.

Mark Noble on spot to earn makeshift West Ham draw with Crystal Palace
While it remains impossible to argue with the assertion that West Ham United are crying out for reinforcements before the transfer window closes, at least the players who are still standing displayed no inclination to hide on a night that demanded inspiration rather than perspiration on the pitch. A point was a respectable reward for their efforts, bearing in mind that they were deprived of nearly an entire first team, and David Moyes was satisfied with the way that his weary team soldiered on in trying circumstances.
They demonstrated their character to fight back after Christian Benteke’s early goal for Crystal Palace, offering another reminder of the excellent job that Moyes has done since replacing Slaven Bilic, and their performance contained enough grit to suggest they are capable of clambering towards safety. Yet they cannot afford any complacency. West Ham are four points above the bottom three – Palace are a point worse off – and Moyes needs his bosses to use every negotiating tactic at their disposal to bring him at least one new signing.

Pochettino to land Lucas Moura for Spurs but rues market ‘realities’
• Manager says club are in ‘different realities’ from top clubs
Mauricio Pochettino has stressed the need for Tottenham Hotspur to make opportunistic strikes on the transfer market, as he prepared to welcome the Brazilian winger Lucas Moura from Paris Saint-Germain for £25m.
The manager mentioned Manchester United’s signing of Alexis Sánchez and Manchester City’s club record £57.2m deal for Aymeric Laporte to illustrate his point that Spurs were operating under “different realities” when compared to the game’s financial heavyweights.

Alexis Sánchez can handle hostile Spurs reception, says José Mourinho
• Mourinho says Sánchez arrival will not affect Marcus Rashford
As a former Arsenal player Alexis Sánchez is likely to be booed when he steps out for Manchester United against Tottenham at Wembley on Wednesday evening but José Mourinho is confident his new signing can cope with any rough reception he might receive in England.
“The story has gone round that he is on one of the top salaries in the Premier League so he is going to get a little bit of attention wherever he goes,” the United manager said. “I don’t think he cares, though. I think he’s used to it. I don’t think it is easy for him when Chile play in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay but that is what he has grown up with. He’s an experienced professional. Crowd reaction isn’t going to be a problem for him.”

Transfer round-up: Sevilla get Everton’s Sandro and Swansea’s Mesa on loan
• Iñigo Martínez joins Athletic Bilbao, Marc Bartra seals Betis switch
Everton’s striker Sandro Ramírez has returned to Spain only six months into his Premier League career after joining Sevilla on loan until the end of the season. The Spain Under-21 international arrived at Goodison Park for £5.2m in the summer after Everton activated the release clause in his contract with Málaga. Sandro had scored 16 goals in 32 games for Málaga last season and his transfer was viewed as a potential bargain but he has struggled to settle in the Premier League and will sign for Sevilla on Wednesday subject to a medical.

Thousands of football fans, former players and relatives have paid a moving tribute to Cyrille Regis, the “gentle, thoughtful, generous, passionate, determined, resilient giant” who blazed a trail for a generation of black footballers.
In a memorial service at West Bromwich Albion’s Hawthorns stadium, a crowd of 2,000 fans broke into rapturous applause and chants of “There’s only one Cyrille Regis” – the song that followed him around England’s football terraces in the 1970s and 80s.

Former youth player accuses ex-football coach of showing no remorse over alleged rape
Barry Bennell has been accused of smirking during his trial on a day in which a court heard how the father of one alleged victim accosted the former Manchester City football coach over rumours of inappropriate behaviour with young players.
Bennell has admitted seven offences of sexual abuse but denies another 48 counts relating to 11 boys from 1979 to 1990. He appeared via video link at Liverpool crown court on Tuesday as the latest former player gave evidence, alleging he was raped seven to 10 times.

Unfit Tim Cahill made to wait before making Millwall return
- Australian not ready for ‘a couple of weeks,’ says Neil Harris
- Striker introduced to home crowd before draw with Derby
Millwall manager Neil Harris has hailed the return of Tim Cahill to the club but cautioned against rushing the Socceroos star into action. The 37-year-old put pen to paper on a short-term deal until the end of the season on Monday, ending weeks of speculation about his future after leaving Melbourne City in December.
He is aiming to become only the fourth man behind Pele, Miroslav Klose and Uwe Seeler to score at four successive World Cups, but for him to accomplish the feat in Russia later this year he desperately needs game time to be assured of a spot in Bert van Marwijk’s squad.

Daniel Sturridge never fitted the bill for Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool | Sachin Nakrani
Looking back, it was probably never going to work out between Daniel Sturridge and Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool. The will was there, and they gave it a decent go, but sometimes two people are not meant to be together and one is left with no choice but to move out, which in this case was always going to be Sturridge. Bags packed, goodbyes said, he has joined West Bromwich Albion in a loan deal that signals the end of his time on Merseyside and leaves many of those concerned lingering on what could have been.
Because it was less than four years ago that Sturridge was a shining light at Anfield. Liverpool had dazzled during an ultimately doomed title charge and while Luis Suárez grabbed most of the headlines, Sturridge’s contribution was also notable – 21 goals, with many of them sensational in their imagination as well as execution.

VAR could curb bad challenges – but football’s technology quandary would deepen | Paul MacInnes
After Joe Bennett’s challenge on Leroy Sané it is natural to wonder whether VAR should be extended to include tackles, but the consequences could be confusing and complex
Joe Bennett’s challenge on Leroy Sané has left the winger injured for up to a month. It was late and it was deliberate, an attempt to stop the Germany international from giving Manchester City a three-goal lead before half-time in their FA Cup tie with Cardiff. It is the sort of tackle that looks worse the more you see it and would always have provoked a debate. On this occasion, however, it has provoked more than one.
The first was started by Pep Guardiola, who used his post-match remarks to make a philosophical point. Players such as those on his team, the Manchester City manager said, were “artists” who needed “protection” in order to play the style of football so many viewers enjoy. Cardiff’s Neil Warnock, meanwhile, insisted such challenges were part of the game. He was more concerned with a second tackle from Bennett that got the player sent off. In Warnock’s opinion it was the latter challenge that was unprofessional, as it incurred a suspension and was therefore “disrespectful” to Bennett’s team-mates.

From nowhere to conquerors of Madrid: Leganés continue their stunning rise | Sid Lowe
They train on a pitch surrounded by rubble but a Copa del Rey win over Real Madrid is the latest step on Leganés’s ride
“It’s very noisy in there,” Asier Garitano said. It was Wednesday night and they were going wild in the Santiago Bernabéu dressing room, wild on the pitch and then wild on the bus as it travelled down the Castellana, 17km south to Butarque, where they arrived long after midnight and with no intention of going home. “It’ll be a late one,” grinned captain Martín Mantovani. Leganés had just made history. “Look around you, it happened,” Nereo Champagne had told Nordin Amrabat as he stood staring wide-eyed at an 80,000-capacity arena long-since empty but for a few hundred fans in blue and white, way up in the north stand and down in a corner of the west. They had beaten Real Madrid for the first time ever, reaching the Copa del Rey semi-final, a place they had never been. No wonder it was noisy.
“This is nothing to celebrate,” Garitano insisted but, while he had a point, Leganés’s manager knew better than anyone that it was – and he knew that, for once, no one was really listening to him. They weren’t listening on Wednesday night, where fans waited at Butarque, flags waving, and they weren’t listening when Leganés went back there on Sunday morning, the place packed, and won again. At the end of a 3-2 victory against Espanyol, Garitano summed up 90 minutes in 32 seconds. “In a game that was even, we scored with our first chance,” he began, “in the 45th minute we clear one off the line; the second half starts and they score; when we’re most struggling, we make it 2-1; they have a chance to equalise, they don’t; we make it 3-1; and when it looks like it’s finished, it’s 3-2 and we end the game suffering.”
